Hair
Growth Stages
|
Healthy human hair normally
follows a cycle of growth (Anagen stage), transition (Catagen
stage) and then falling out (Telogen or resting stage). Then new hair growth starts over
again.
Anagen - Growth Stage
Normal healthy hairs grow at
the rate of about 1/2 inch per month, but vary by individual.
A healthy hair follicle produces a strong, thick, colored
hair. The hair follicles grow the hair for a period of 2 to 6
years in increase in diameter during this phase. In a normal scalp, about 90% of the hairs are in this
stage at any given time. Some follicles produce thick
colored hairs, called terminal hairs and other follicles
produce short, thin, non-colored hairs, called vellus hairs.
Catagen - Transition Stage
After the growing stage, the hair goes into a short
transitional stage, which typically lasts about two to three
weeks. Less than 1% of your hair is in this stage at any
given time.
Telogen - Resting Stage
Next the hair follicles enter a period of rest for
approximately three months. After that time, the follicles
lose their old hairs and resume
the growing stage of producing new hairs. About
10% of your hairs are in the resting stage
at any given time.
Most individuals lose between 40 and 100 hairs per day. This
is a very small amount of hairs, considering that the
average head of hair has approximately 100,000 individual
shafts of hair.
Normally, as the hair goes through these three stages, the
follicles tend to return to the same length and width during
the growing phase. As a result, they generally produce the
same length and width hair shafts.
All hairs cycle through these three stages repeatedly. The length and thickness
of each hair shaft is determined by how long
the hair itself is allowed to grow in the follicle before entering into the resting
/ shedding stage. Consequently, pattern hair loss is actually a
gradual conversion of thick terminal hairs to thin vellus-like
hairs.

What the
HairGenesis™ researchers
discovered about DHT and Hair Loss |
5-Alpha-Reductase (5AR) is an enzyme in the body which
converts the hormone testosterone into Di Hydro Testosterone
(DHT) .
DHT is important developmentally early in a man's life.
However, it is widely believed to precipitate the most common
variety of hair loss. In pattern hair loss, DHT triggers a
chain of events that result in a negative growth cycle of
hairs within susceptible hair follicles. The affected hair
follicles continue in this negative progression until they no
longer produce visible hair.
DHT binds (or locks into) to specific points on the hair follicle known as
androgen receptor sites. The DHT then causes the follicles to
shrink.
It is the binding (locking) of DHT inside the hair follicles and roots
that is one of the primary causes of male and female pattern
hair loss.
One may think of this as an electrical plug going into an
electrical wall outlet. Unfortunately, when this attachment
occurs in susceptible scalp hair follicles, it causes a
negative change in the growth pattern of the hair. The
follicle and accompanying structures begin a process of
miniaturization. The hair shrinks in diameter and the hair
growth cycle becomes shorter.
The result is smaller, thinner,
weaker, virtually invisible hairs (lighter in color).
Eventually the hair follicles and roots may die and the hair falls
out, a process which is called "pattern hair loss"
or AndroGenetic Alopecia (AGA).
Over time, increased hair loss follows a particular pattern on
the scalp, as shown in the Norwood
pattern hair loss diagram.
Hair outside of this pattern remains healthy and vigorous.
Research has also shown that DHT is found at the base of the
hair shaft, or at its roots. There it creates a wax-like
substance around the roots and thus constricts the blood
supply to them.
Proper nutrition is critical in order to maintain strong,
healthy hairs. A restricted blood supply to the hair roots
(dermal papilla) prevents necessary proteins, vitamins and
minerals from bringing nourishment needed to sustain life in
those hairs.
When there is a limited supply of blood to the
hair roots, the cells in the follicles and roots reproduce at
a much slower rate. This causes the hair follicles to become
smaller and thus shortens their growing stage (anagen phase)
and or lengthens their resting stage (telogen phase).
|
|
Research
has shown that in susceptible individuals, DHT contributes to
the
miniaturization of the hair follicles,
weakening of the hairs themselves in those follicles, a shortening
of the hair growth phase and a lengthening of the hair
resting phase. As the growing phase becomes shorter,
the quality of the hair degenerates, so the hairs becomes
thinner, weaker and lighter in color. At the same time, there
is more frequent fall out of those smaller and weaker hairs.
This results in a gradual thinning of the hair on the affected
areas of the scalp - hence, baldness may set in at those
places.
